Citations

Maybe citations are the biggest roadblock to accessible academic writing. Maybe we should be allowed to just read a bit and think about where we sit at this moment in time after reading the bit of theory that resonated. Then we formulate a piece of writing that explains where we personally stand without the overt acknowledgement of our influences. A bit like musicians and artists. Then when people engage with our work they ask questions like “I get a sense that you have been a bit influenced by Barad/Pollock/U2”. And we say “I was reading/visiting/listening when I wrote this piece so I see where you get that but this is my understanding of the world, not hers”.

What do you think?
